Smart Exam Monitor Update for Fall 2020
Posted by Dave Laurie on 18 September 2020 02:54 PM

Attention eClass Users,

A new version of the remote exam monitoring platform Smart Exam Monitor (SEM) has been released for Fall term. This release features a more secure workflow that forces students to launch their browsers in full screen mode to prevent distractions. In this workflow, any attempts to leave the full screen quiz view before a quiz is completed will be flagged.

Full details for instructors on how to set up this workflow are available here. Also of note, SEM tools can now be more easily added to courses as the option is available directly in the activity chooser.

Any instructors planning to use SEM in Fall term are encouraged to contact eClass support at eclass@ualberta.ca or by phone at 780-492-9372 during business hours for a full breakdown of the system specifics and a list of recommended practices.

Regards,
IST eClass Support

eClass Session Timeout Change September 10th 2020
Posted by Dave Laurie on 10 September 2020 03:24 PM

Attention eClass users,

Due to the issues with the eClass login service (SSO), we have increased the user session timeout to 4 hours. The login service experienced problems around 6:00 PM September 8th and 9th so this change should allow users who complete classes in the late afternoon to remain authenticated in eClass should the sign-in problems persist.

We recommend that any users trying to access eClass during the evening sign on before 6:00 PM to avoid any authentication issues.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve the reliability of our login service. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Regards,
IST eClass Support

Google File Embed Issue
Posted by Chris Goetz on 04 September 2020 09:59 AM

Attention eClass Users,

We have confirmed that some students in classes with content delivered via the Google File Embed activity are encountering the following error when they try to access video files:

“Unable to play this video at this time. The number of allowed playbacks has been exceeded. Please try again later”

Our teams have contacted Google Support to have them diagnose this issue. While we work with Google towards a solution, we want to ensure that users who are impacted by this issue are equipped with alternative options to allow students to get access to their content.

Any instructors who have had students report this issue are advised to use one of the following workarounds to ensure students can access their video content:

  1. Post a URL resource to the video file directly or add a shareable link to the video URL in eClass instead of using the Google File Embed feature.
  2. Upload the video directly into your eClass course as a Stream2 video.
  3. If you do not need to control access to your video, you can upload it to youtube and embed it into your course.

If you have any questions or require any assistance with employing one of these workarounds, please contact us at eclass@ualberta.ca.

Regards,
