Saving eClass Content in Your ePortfolio

Article Last Updated November 2018

Students and instructors have the option to export any content they submit into activities on eClass into the U of ePortfolio system. This might simply be done as a way of keeping copies of completed work or might be part of a program or degree capping exercise to demonstrate that a specific outcome or learning objective has been met. An overview of the export process with screenshots is available in the article: Exporting Content to a Portfolio. This article contains more detail on the specific pathways for exporting specific types of content to your ePortfolio.

Once content has been exported, it can be kept indefinitely on the ePortfolio site as long as a user keeps their CCID active by logging in every 6 months. Note that content stored in an ePortfolio is private and cannot be viewed by anyone until it is organized into Pages or Collections and shared with a desired audience.

For both instructors and students, the available locations in eClass where export options appear are:

  • any files submitted to assignments.
  • forum discussion topics and replies to forum posts.
  • any files submitted as attachments in forum posts.
  • any content submitted to collaborative activities such as wikis, glossaries, and databases.

The eventual export locations where content gets stored in an ePortfolio is determined by the type of content in eClass in conjunction with the available options in the Available export formats dropdown box that appears once Mahara ePortfolio is selected as the export destination. Differences in the content loaction and type on eClass determine what appears in the dialog box and it does not appear if there is only a single possible type of export format available.

The table below describes all of the various content locations and types in eClass and the resulting storage location in a user's ePortfolio:

- File export is preferred option because clicking 'Continue to portfolio' in eClass leads directly to Files > Home > Incoming

- Sometimes PDF files show a warning about waiting for the transfer to complete. This can be ignored under normal conditions, ie. when accessing using regular internet access.
