Preparing Templates for Student ePortfolios

This article is for instructors setting up a template for a common structure/content of their student ePortfolio submissions.

This article assumes that you have already created a structure and informational requirements you would like your students to complete when submitting their ePortfolio. For more information on constructing pages and collections in your portfolio, see the article Adding Content to Your Portfolio. Once your content is prepared, you need to then share this material with the students - they will then copy the content into their own portfolios (using the article Copying Templates into Your ePortfolio.)

To allow students to copy this material, best practice is to copy this material into a group in ePortfolios that all your students have been added to (or have joined by request). Using groups to share content gives a bit more control over who accesses the content, allows multiple instructors to make accesses to the template, offers the option to enable student submissions of their pages, and provides a notification system for alerting course personnel of group events.

To share your course template collection or pages with your course group:

  1. Sign in to ePortfolios through eClass and click on the Portfolio tab of your personal ePortfolio space
  2. Next click on Shared by me



  3. Click the lock icon under Edit access



  4. Open the Advanced options, then toggle Allow copying to Yes



  5. Close the Advanced options
  6. Open the Share with dialog



  7. Under 'Groups' select the group you want to share the template collection with. Alternatively, if you are not concerned about having wider access to your content, you could set 'Share with' to Public and allow students to copy directly through Shared with me from within their ePortfolios.



  8. Enter any date restrictions on the sharing you require
  9. Click Save

Once shared with a group, you should also copy the collection directly into the group so that students could preview it and other course instructors can make edits:

  1. Once you've signed into your ePortfolio, click on the Groups link in the top horizontal bar
  2. Click on the group for the course you are working in



  3. In the horizontal green bar, click on Collections
  4. Then click on Copy a Collection



  5. Enter the title or a part of the title in the search field and then click Search
  6. Click Copy collection

Students and instructors will now see the content template in the group Collections area. After this step if you want, you could restore the privacy on your own personal template collection.
