Major eClass Upgrade June 2019 - Upcoming Changes
Posted by Dave Laurie on 03 April 2019 03:40 PM

Attention eClass Users,

Please be aware that in June 2019, we will be performing a major version upgrade to eClass. This upgrade will introduce a variety of bug fixes and feature improvements across the site.

The upgrade will require a full system outage, which has been scheduled for Saturday, June 22nd 2019 from 12:00AM until Sunday June 23rd at 11:59PM (48 hours).

The main system features that will change in the new version of eClass are listed below:

Highlights

  • New audio and video recording options are now available directly within the HTML editor to record and embed brief media snippets. (This is an experimental feature still under evaluation for any potential performance impacts.)
  • Quiz question banks now have tagging functionality enabled. Instructors can create tags when editing questions, filter by tags when working in the question bank, and add random question sets to quizzes based on tags.
  • All dates/times in eClass can now be set to the nearest minute.

Quiz Improvements

  • Instructors can now add file type restrictions to Essay questions.
  • Instructors can now embed files as feedback when manually grading quiz questions.

Assignment Improvements

  • A link to ‘View all submissions’ has been added as a return path within the PDF grading screen.
  • Clicking ‘Next page’ within the assignment grading interface will now reset scrolling to the top of the next page.

Miscellaneous Changes

  • Badges can now be used as criteria for achieving other badges. Cohort membership and uploading of a profile picture are now valid badge criteria.
  • Choice activity: Students are now informed of how their selected choice will be displayed within the course.
  • SCORM activity: Instructors can now enable a setting to force users to begin a new attempt when entering the SCORM activity.
  • Instructors in non-credit courses can now bulk-delete self-enrollments.
  • Glossary activity: Users can now link directly to individual glossary entries.

Please also note that the following features have been deprecated and will no longer be available in the new version of eClass:

  • Kaltura Media

This list of features may be subject to change before the upgrade takes place. We will be providing training and support materials to prepare users for major changes as the upgrade date draws closer.

If you have any questions about this upgrade, please contact us at eclass@ualberta.ca. Also, if you are interested in testing the latest features coming to eClass and have not yet signed up to be involved in User Acceptance Testing (UAT), please contact us for more information.

Regards,
IST eClass Support

Students’ Union eClass Usage Survey
Posted by Dave Laurie on 27 March 2019 02:00 PM

In collaboration with IST and the Centre for Teaching and Learning, the SU is running a survey to obtain a student perspective on how eClass is being used and how well it is meeting student needs.

The data collected from this survey will help IST's eClass Support team improve the system and inform any future initiatives to make changes to the service.

The survey is open to all students at the University of Alberta. It should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

Please access the survey here.

Note that access to the survey will close on Friday, April 5th so please ensure that you submit your feedback before then. If you have any questions or run into issues completing the survey, please contact at eclass@ualberta.ca.

Regards,
IST eClass Support

UPDATE: The survey is now closed. Thank you to everyone who contributed their feedback.

RESOLVED: eClass Forum Post eMail Problem February 14th 2019
Posted by Dave Laurie on 14 February 2019 01:21 PM

Attention eClass Users,

RESOLVED: February 15th, 10:45AM - eClass developers and our hosting provider determined the cause of the issue and repaired it. Forum post emails are now processing correctly and have begun being sent to users. It may take several hours for all the messages accumulated over the interruption period to be mailed out.

UPDATE: February 14th, 2019, 4:00PM - eClass support developers are continuing to investigate but no solution is available at this time.

Users have begun reporting that eClass forum post emails have not been sending. This means that messages posted by instructors to course announcement forums are not being sent directly to student’s ualberta gmail addresses as they normally would be. Regular eClass functions and other system notification types (assignments, quizzes, person-to-person messages etc.) are working normally.

eClass support staff have begun investigating.

Until the issue is resolved, instructors can consult Alternatives to Emailing Students through Course Announcement Forums for other communication options. It is also recommended that students check their eClass course announcement forums to ensure they keep up to date.

Thank you for your patience as we try to restore forum email notifications to eClass. If you have any questions about this issue, please contact us at eclass@ualberta.ca.

Regards,
IST eClass Support

UPDATED - eClass Outage Saturday January 5th 2019
Posted by Dave Laurie on 14 December 2018 01:54 PM

Attention eClass users,

UPDATE: The mobile app is now available - please see here for more information.

UPDATE: eClass is now available - the maintenance outage was completed early and the site was released on January 5th 2019 at 8:00AM.

This is a reminder that there will be a scheduled maintenance outage for eClass from Saturday January 5th, 2019 12:00AM through Sunday January 6th, 2019 11:59PM. This outage is required to perform annual system maintenance and release updates to eClass.

The major change of note in this outage is the beta release of the eClass mobile app - a native iOS and Android application that enables basic course access and a limited set of eClass functionality for on-the-go access. For a full list of the available features and intended uses of the app, please see this article.

Please note that while we have booked a 48-hour maintenance window, eClass will be available as soon as the required changes are complete. (The January 2018 outage took only 9 hours to complete.) We will be sending an additional announcement once access to eClass has been restored.

eClass and eClassLive will be unavailable for the duration of this outage. If you have any questions about this outage, please contact us at eclass@ualberta.ca.

Regards,
IST eClass Support

iClicker End-of-life Summer 2019
Posted by Dave Laurie on 23 November 2018 02:21 PM

Attention iClicker users,

Starting in July 2019, iClicker will no longer be supported as a student response system (SRS) at the University of Alberta. iClicker base stations will be removed from labs and classrooms and technical support for iClickers will no longer be provided by IST.

This decision has been made based off of feedback to replace iClicker with a web accessible system that is free to use, integrated with eClass, and does not require students to purchase a separate device.

Until the decommissioning occurs, all existing iClicker users will continue to have full support and access to existing base stations.

To replace iClicker, IST will now be supporting ePoll, a fully online, free-to-use SRS that is already available and being used by a number of early adopters. ePoll has gone through several rounds of architectural and feature improvements and provides a full range of student response system features.

For full documentation about using ePoll, please view this article.

Anyone with questions about this change can contact us for more information at eclass@ualberta.ca.

Regards,
IST eClass Support
