Highlights of eClass Changes for Fall 2017

RESOLVED: iClicker Registration Issues September 5th 2017

Attention iClicker Users,

This issue was resolved September 7th 2017 at 7AM - students will now see their clicker ID when accessing the registration activity in eClass.

An issue is affecting the iClicker registration activity in eClass. This bug is preventing students from verifying which clicker ID they have registered, even though they have correctly registered their clickers.

When students register an iClicker they will encounter the following behaviour: nothing appears to happen initially (they are returned to the same screen), after which when they re-enter their ID, they will receive a message stating ‘Error writing to database’. Later attempts to access the registration page will appear as though the registration process has not taken place.

Users who encounter this issue should rest assured that their initial registration will be captured by the system and visible to instructors.

eClassLive (Adobe Connect) Add-in Forced Version Change August 26th, 2017

Attention eClassLive Users,

On September 9th 2017, the current version of the Adobe Connect Add-in (a tool required to use several of the eClassLive features including screen sharing, meeting recording, and others) will cease functioning.

Adobe released a new version of the add-in August 9th 2017 to resolve this issue, which is available for download here. If you have not already installed it, we recommend that you use Firefox to complete this installation, as Chrome’s built-in version of Flash can sometimes cause issues during the installation process.

After the eClass outage on Saturday, August 26th 2017, eClassLive users will be forced to download the updated version of the Add-in the next time they access an eClassLive session. This process should occur on the fly when screen sharing is launched by selecting Yes as seen in the screenshot below.

Attention eClass users,

UPDATE: eClass is now available: the maintenance outage was completed early and the site was released at 10:45AM.

There is a scheduled maintenance outage for eClass on Saturday August 26th 2017 from 12:00AM - 11:59PM. This outage is required to perform infrastructure maintenance and to release several improvements to eClass. Some of the new changes include:

Please note that while we have booked a 24 hour maintenance window, eClass will be available as soon as the required infrastructure changes are complete. We will be sending an additional announcement once access to eClass has been restored.

eClass and eClassLive will be unavailable for the duration of this outage. If you have any questions about this outage, please contact us at eclass@ualberta.ca.

eClass Maintenance Outage Saturday, August 5th, 2017 6:00AM - 1:00PM

Please be aware that eClass will require an outage on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This outage is required by our hosting provider to apply file system upgrades to the eClass infrastructure.

eClass and eClassLive will be unavailable for the duration of this outage. If you have any questions about this outage, please contact us at eclass@ualberta.ca

eClass Major Outage Schedule 2017-2018

Attention eClass users,

eClass requires regularly scheduled outages to perform necessary updates and maintenance to eClass and eClassLive on specific dates designed to minimize the impact on the majority of eClass users.

For the coming year, full 24-hour and 48-hour maintenance windows for eClass and eClassLive are scheduled for the following dates:

  • August 26th 2017 (24 hours)
  • January 6th - 7th 2018 (48 hours)
  • May 5th, 2018 (24 hours)
  • June 23rd - 24th 2018 (48 hours)

Each 24-hour outage will run from 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM and each 48-hour outage will start at 12:00 AM on the first listed day and will end at 11:59 PM on the following day unless otherwise posted.

eClass and eClassLive will be unavailable for the duration of each of these maintenance windows, so please plan well in advance and do not schedule any tasks that require eClass to be available during these windows. Note however that most outages will require less time than forecast and anytime the work is completed early the system is released for use.

Please note that this new schedule only includes planned maintenance windows, and that eClass may still require emergency outages for shorter durations as necessary throughout the year.
