eClass Emergency Outage December 12th 2020 from 1:00AM - 1:30AM

Attention eClass users,

Please be aware that there will be an eClass outage on Saturday December 12th, 2020 from 1:00AM to 1:30AM. This outage is required by our hosting team to perform urgent preventative system maintenance.

eClass will be unavailable throughout the maintenance window.

UPDATE: eClass Outage Friday December 11th 2020 2:05PM

UPDATE: The eClass service was restored at 3:45PM. The hosting team is continuing to monitor the application and will be performing further maintenance overnight.

Attention eClass Users,

eClass began experiencing an outage at 2:05PM Friday December 11th, 2020. Users are experiencing severe performance degradations and error messages.

IST eClass hosting staff are investigating the root cause and working to get the service restored as soon as possible.

Students impacted will be accommodated and will not be penalized for disruptions to their exams/assignments. Those directly impacted will receive more information by early next week. For more information see here.

Short Zoom Outage Monday Nov. 16th, 2020 from 2:00AM-2:30AM

Attention Zoom Users,


There will be a brief Zoom outage on Monday November 16th, 2020 from 2:00AM until 2:30AM.


This outage is required by the vendor to increase the in-meeting maximum capacity of Breakout Rooms to 1000 participants (with the ability to pre-assign up to 500 participants in advance of a meeting). Please note that these maximums only apply for users with approved and purchased ‘Large Meeting’ packages. The standard meeting cap for all other users on the UofA license is 300 participants, but after this outage users will be able to pre-assign and use Breakout Rooms for their full participant list.


Any Zoom meetings during this outage window will be interrupted.

Final Exam Delivery Update

Attention eClass Users,

With the final exam period approaching, we recommend that instructors review the available strategies and services for delivering exams remotely.

Instructors who are new to remote exam delivery are also encouraged to view recordings of our recent webinars:

We also strongly recommend that instructors refer to our guides on providing Exam Accommodations in remote exams and reviewing completed exams delivered using Smart Exam Monitor.

During the final exam period from December 2nd through December 22nd, we are also pleased to announce that IST eClass support will be extending our service hours to ensure exam coverage, remaining open from 8:30AM through 6:00PM weekdays and from 8:30AM to 6:00PM on Saturdays.

Also, please note that the eClass infrastructure will be proactively monitored, optimized, and reinforced with additional server resources during the final exam period.

Midterm Exam Delivery Update

UPDATED: Smart Exam Monitor Update for Fall 2020

Attention eClass Users,

Update September 24th: An additional release for SEM has added the option to add quiz passwords directly into SEM session settings to allow students to launch quizzes more easily in the Closed book full screen workflow. A number of other minor fixes and language changes were added.

A new version of the remote exam monitoring platform Smart Exam Monitor (SEM) has been released for Fall term. This release features a more secure workflow that forces students to launch their browsers in full screen mode to prevent distractions. In this workflow, any attempts to leave the full screen quiz view before a quiz is completed will be flagged.

Full details for instructors on how to set up this workflow are available here. Also of note, SEM tools can now be more easily added to courses as the option is available directly in the activity chooser.

Any instructors planning to use SEM in Fall term are encouraged to contact eClass support at eclass@ualberta.ca or by phone at 780-492-9372 during business hours for a full breakdown of the system specifics and a list of recommended practices.
